Algeria run Germany close!
France scored twice in the final
11 minutes in Brasilia to
beat Nigeria and reach
the World Cup quarter-finals.
A very tight exciting game between
Germany and Algeria, that went full term
without a goal. The deadlock was broken
in the second minute of extra time
by Andre Schurrle with a cheeky flick
that found the back of the net.
Mesut Ozi scored in the 119th minute
to make it 2-0.
Then after 120 minutes Abdelmoumene Djabou
arrived on a great cross to bury at the back post
to see the game end 2-1.
The Little Football Fan thought
Rais Mbolhi - Algerian goalkeeper,
was sensational!

Then there were 12!
Costa Rica will play the Netherlands
in the quarter-finals of the World Cup
after defeating Greece on penalties.
Penalty Drama in Brazil!
Wonderful game of football
between Costa Rica and Greece,
but ending in heartache for
the Greeks, as
Theofanis Gekas missed his penalty!
Costa Rica won 5 - 3.

Colombia v Uruguay
James Rodriguez confirmed his status
as the World Cup's newest star
with
a virtuoso display
as Colombia took advantage of
Luis Suarez's absence
to beat Uruguay in Rio.
Brazil v Chile - First of the Knock out stage.
Hosts Brazil knock Chile
out of the 2014 Fifa World Cup

Brazil 2014 - 26th June
Thomas Muller once again made the difference
as Germany qualified as
winners of Group G
with victory over the United States,
who also reached
the last 16 at the World Cup.
A controversial equaliser from Islam Slimani
is enough to secure Algeria
qualification
for the 2014 World Cup last 16
at Russia's expense as
the teams drew 1-1
in Curitiba.
Ten-man Belgium beat South Korea
to top their World Cup group
and set up a last-16 tie against
the United States.
Cristiano Ronaldo's second-half winner
gave Portugal a 2-1 victory over
Ghana,
but the result means that neither team
progress to the World
Cup's last 16.

Brazil - Day 14
France could not maintain their prolific
start to the 2014 Fifa World
Cup but still finished
top of Group E following a goalless draw
with
Ecuador which eliminates
the South Americans.
A hat-trick of left-footed strikes by Xherdan Shaqiri
prove enough to
send Switzerland through
to the knockout stage with a comfortable
3-0 win over Honduras in their final Group E match.
Lionel Messi strikes help Argentina to beat
Nigeria 3-2 in their final Group F game in Porto Alegre.
For the first time in World Cup finals history
both teams scored inside
the opening
five minutes, as both teams
progress to the second round.
Iran's hopes of qualifying for
the World Cup last 16
ended as they lost to
already-eliminated Bosnia-Hercegovina.
Little Football Fan - Encouraging reading
With the Little Football Fan's aim being to encourage children,
particularly boys, to read through a shared passion for football,
the reading doesn't necessarily have to be about football.
Rockpool Children's Books will soon be presenting

Cricket, explained!
You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.
Each man that's in
the side that's in goes out,
and when he's out he comes in and the next
man goes in until he's out.
When they are all out, the side that's out
comes in
and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those
coming in, out.
Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out,
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out,
and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in.
There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they
decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been
in and
all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice
after
all the men have been in, including those who are not out,
that is the
end of the game!
Very straight forward.
Next week, Rugby Union explained!
US Soccer
Football, or soccer, fans have been
celebrating
in their thousands across the United States
as their team
beat their World Cup nemesis, Ghana, 2 - 1 last night.
Ghana have
knocked the USA out of the tournament
at the last two World Cups.
The
increase in popularity of soccer has been credited
to the US being
hosts 20 years ago,
but it's still not as popular as major US sports
like American Football.
However, the US has been one of the top buyers

of tickets for this years event, just behind the hosts Brazil.
“The Game for All Kids!”

exploded from 100,000
players
in 1974 to more than 1 million in the early nineties.
Today, US
Youth Soccer registers
more than 3 million players annually,
ages 5 to

US Youth Soccer State Associations.

Congratulations to the USA for their 86th
minute winner
scored by a clearly disbelieving John Brooks against a
much improved
and spirited Ghana in the second half.

Spain 1 Holland 5 -
Spain 1 Holland 5
Is it a bird, is it a plane, no it's Hollands
Van Persie....
A highlight of this great game
was when
Holland grew in confidence
and stunned Spain
when Van Persie met Daley Blind's
crossfield pass
with an astonishing header
that looped over a despairing
Casillas.
An amazing goal that will be shown again
and again…
